The year is 1888, T. S. Eliot is born, the east coast of America is struck by The Great Blizzard, Jack the Ripper claims his first victim, Van Gogh cuts off his ear and our family venture into the Woollen Spinning Industry. The company Robert Todd and Son starts trading with the aim to produce the finest quality woollen spun yarns from its base at Shaddon Mills in the historic border town of Carlisle.
Fast-forward 125 years and my, how things have changed! For a start, great-grandfather's mill is still full of people, but only because now it's been renovated into 52 luxury apartments! Textile production in the UK has for the most part gone the way of many other manufacturing industries unable to compete with cheaper Far East production. But one thing hasn't changed, Todds are still in business, and today the 4th generation of our family continues to bring high-quality yarns to UK knitters and weavers.
With knowledge acquired and passed down through the generations for more than a century we know a decent ball of wool or cone of yarn when we see one. We value quality, service and our loyal customers. For the past 30 years we have been supplying the highest quality Merino, Lambswool, Cashmere, Cotton and fancy yarns to the industrial knitwear manufacturers and weavers in the Scottish Borders, Yorkshire, the Midlands and in fact all corners of the UK. We have developed partnerships with the very best of the European spinners and have remained a market leader. We value many of the world’s most respected brands as our customers.
There have been many twists and turns (excuse the spinning pun!) throughout this journey and the latest is the launching of our hand knitting collection of yarns, Todds Hand Knits, a collaboration with Italy’s finest worsted spinner, Zegna Baruffa Lana Borgesesia. The boffins at Baruffa have been burning the midnight oil and pushing the spinning boundaries to produce a wonderful collection of yarns in beautiful colours; of course, you expect nothing less from Italy! Extra fine merino in various weights, a luxurious silk merino blend and no collection would be complete without Cashmere - but not just an ordinary Cashmere, a chainette offering extra softness and luxury.
