Last week we headed off to the Pitti Filati yarn show in Florence. This year’s show, held between 22nd-24th Jan, marked the 74th year of the main international event for the knitting yarn industry. The tradeshow acts as a research lab and an observatory on global lifestyle trends. Last week’s show previewed the trends for Spring/Summer 2015, giving designers and trade insiders from all over the world the first chance to catch what’s in store for next year.

The infamous trend area visually revealed these future fashion forecasts. The over-arching theme this January moved away from the sentimentality of last summer’s edition and headed towards a bolder motif that allowed for multiple (and impressive!) interpretations. The word of inspiration was simply, PLAY. PLAY inspired lots of different themes and was broken down into smaller trend stories, everything from Mime to Diva and from Bizarre to Lego was explored.

Bizarre was most definitely our favourite section - bold, eye-catching colours were contrasted against each other for extra WOW factor. Think bright purples paired with yellows and reds with shocking lime. We’re definitely taking this fearless approach to colour into our next knitting project!

Surreal gave us some gentler, more neutral tones with the odd splash of blue and lots of draping silhouettes. The ROCK section turned it right up to 11. This section played with mostly reds, oranges and gold in a real homage to our main man Bowie (Ziggy’s iconic face was even emblazoned on the knitwear with extra sequins!). These Rock inspired creations stood in front of a wall covered floor to ceiling in vinyls, a very cool touch.

All in all a fabulous trip to Florence, great food, good wine & even better knitting inspiration! Keep an eye out on our Facebook and Instagram pages for lots more pictures from the trip.

(NB: we were a little disappointed not to make it to the Vintage Selection, a short bus ride away from Fortezza da Basso. Maybe next time!)
