Last week HRH Prince Charles, alongside Campaign for Wool, encouraged everyone to Choose Wool during a day of demonstrations and speeches at Clarence House. The event was held as part of a drive to revive the British love affair with wool.
In an exciting display Prince Charles torched clothes made from synthetic fibres alongside others made from wool and marked the differences. Flames quickly consumed the synthetic fibres whilst the wool clothing merely smouldered and went out. The Prince of Wales then went on to explain that the complex cell structure of wool combined with its high water content makes it naturally fire retardant. One pretty memorable way to prove a point! Prince Charles used the display to focus on the positive ecological and sustainable attributes of wool (as well as its flame retardant properties!)
In a similar comparative experiment the Prince buried both a synthetic jumper and a woollen jumper in the flowerbeds of Clarence House to show how much faster wool biodegrades in comparison to its less natural counterpart – the results will be revealed next year so we will be sure to keep you up to date!
The Prince of Wales also spent time alongside the fabulous AW14 Sibling collection (pictured above), which many of you will already know contains our beautiful Baruffa yarns. Sibling’s Sister AW14 collection claimed the runner-up award at this year’s prestigious Woolmark Prize which saw designers from across the world go head to head with innovative (and absolutely stunning!) designs created with 100% merino wool. Sitting in the gardens at Clarence House the collection has never looked so vibrant, receiving a true Royal approval!
